Benefits Of Decluttering Your Wardrobe

I know I can’t be the only one that has felt overwhelmed with the amount of clutter they have. Yes, I used the ‘C’ word, clutter. That’s all it is. Them piles of clothes sitting in your wardrobe that have yet to see the light of day are just that. Do you need them to live? Some may argue yes. In reality, they are just another distraction to take your attention from the more important things in life.
Now, this isn’t a minimalist blog. Far from it. I have way more clothes than I need and I’m certainly guilty of buying something just because it’s on sale and never actually wearing it. However, as I’ve gotten older I’m starting to appreciate quality over quantity. I won’t tell you to scrap everything and just have a basic capsule wardrobe because that would make me a hypocrite. If you’re someone who’s really into dresses and has a collection to rival the Kardashians, that’s great. As long as each dress has a purpose and gets worn, there isn’t a problem. These are just the benefits I’ve had from downsizing my wardrobe that I think could benefit you as well.

Let’s start with the obvious, space.
Decluttering your wardrobe will provide you with more room than you even know you had. The more open space you have, the clearer your mind will be. You’ll have less distractions and one less thing to worry about.

Think of the money.
Getting rid of clothes can be very profitable. I’ve made a fair amount of income from selling clothes and shoes I don’t wear. I use eBay as I find it easy to use and everything usually sells pretty quickly. You could put this money towards a trip you’ve always wanted to go on or a deposit for a house.

You will feel less guilty.
Instead of seeing rails of unworn clothes when you open your wardrobe, you will see an organised closet full with clothes you love. The stress of having too much can lower your mood. I would often feel regret and ashamed at all the items of clothes I had. I could’ve spent that money on something else or put it aside for savings. Not just wasted it on clothes I would wear a couple times then never touch again. Letting go of these bad choices, will release you of the guilt.

Helping someone in need.
The clothes you barely touch could make someone else very happy. Donating your goods to charity can help people stay warm in the winter, raise money for a good cause and many other opportunities. Helping others will make you feel good and you can be content in knowing your clothes are going to a better home.

Time to kill.
Searching through all your pieces to find something you want to wear can take up a lot of time. With a more organised, streamlined wardrobe your clothes will be more accessible and the less you have, the less you have to look through. I can’t tell the amount of time I have wasted trying to find something. With a downsized closet, I can see all my clothes in front of me and pick an outfit fast.

You’ll be more motivated.
Living with less clothes will assure you that you didn’t need all the stuff you thought you did to be happy. Downsizing your wardrobe will spur you to declutter the rest of your things and then these benefits will apply to every aspect of your life, not just your closet.

I hope you feel inspired to downsize and declutter your wardrobe. Thanks for reading XOXO.
