Change Your Thoughts, Change Your Life

As someone who never looked on the bright side and always focused on the negatives, I know how changing your perspective on things can have a positive impact on your life. Particuarly when I was younger, if one wrong thing happened, it would ruin my whole day. It didn’t matter if I was out for the day somewhere I should be enjoying myself. If one bad thing happened, no matter how small, I would spoil the rest of the day by letting it eat away at me.

Letting things go was never something I was very good at. If someone said one bad comment to me I would fester on it for days after. I felt like I had a big grey cloud following me which would only grow bigger as it soaked up all the negative energy.

It wasn’t until my depression came back and I sought help through Cognitive Behavourial Therapy that I realised, for the most part, I could control how I felt about something. An example of this would be if I had a negative thought, I would need to ask myself, is this a fact or an opinion? Asking yourself questions really helps you understand the thoughts and get some perspective.

Speaking of perspective, fueling yourself with pessimistic thoughts isn’t healthy. To counteract these negative feelings, list all the good things that you are thankful for. Realising there is good in your life instantly will make you feel more positive. When I felt like giving up I would think of my daughter and how much she makes me smile.

Combining a new positive outlook and my willpower to succeed, I really feel like I have changed my life for the better. I make goals I want to achieve which feed a hunger inside of me that makes me want to live my life to it’s fullest. It’s not all smooth sailing, like if I write a blog post that doesn’t do very well, I feel deflated. The old me would have given up by now. Actually, the old me wouldn’t have even started a blog in the first place due to the fear of failure and rejection. Just by accomplishing small tasks I feel proud because I’m working towards my end goal. When I tick things off my to-do-lists I feel proud because I am being productive.

The only person that could change my life for the better is me. No one is going to hand me what I want on a plate. I have to work for it and that’s what I keep telling myself so I can stay on track. When I am starting to feel down I do one of the things on my Things To Do When Your Moods Low post so I don’t fall deeper into a pit of negativity.  I can usually tell the first signs of when my depression begins to surface, but thankfully they haven’t developed into any major depression episodes. I honestly believe by focusing on the good things in my life and keeping myself busy, I have waved off any potential depressive states I could have been in.

Being depressed or in a negative state of mind isn’t easy to come out of. This post is just how I stay above water by implementing these changes to my everyday life. I hope I could help someone feel more positive by being thankful and focusing on the good in their life. Thanks for reading XOXO.
